Director of Tax (HNW, Estates, Trusts)

We have partnered exclusively with a reputable Wealth Advisory firm based in Austin, TX in its search for a Director of Tax. The firm has a loyal and sophisticated client base consisting of high-net-worth (and ultra HNW) individuals and families throughout Texas, with a 15+ year track record of success and growth. Practice areas include integrated Legal, Tax, and Financial Services such as estate planning, trust administration, income tax planning & preparation, family office support, asset protection & risk management, transactional tax counsel, closely-held business planning, and general counsel, amongst other areas.

The Director of Tax will serve as the firm’s leader for Tax engagement planning and execution, advising clients on technical and strategic Tax & Wealth Transfer items, while overseeing Tax reporting & compliance. This position will manage a small team of staff, while working closely with firm leadership on strategic initiatives, progressively becoming a leader within the firm.

Please note that this individual will not be responsible for developing new business or generating new clients. However, this person will build and maintain trusting relationships with an established group of long-term clients, while supporting the onboarding of new clients. This is a genuine succession opportunity in which this person will work alongside a long-time, outgoing Tax Director during a structured transition period designed to transfer relationships, operational & technical duties, and leadership responsibilities over time. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Tax Manager, Director, or current/former Tax Partner to join a high-caliber firm in a key role.

Job duties will include, although not be limited to:

  • Leading tax engagement planning & execution for an established portfolio of high-net-worth and ultra-HNW clients
  • Advising clients on complex tax planning items including Trusts, Estate & Gift tax, and Philanthropy, along with closely-held businesses, Partnerships, and various sophisticated ownership structures
  • Providing technical tax expertise to numerous internal practice areas within the firm such as Risk Management, Business Entity Counsel, Transactional Counsel, Trust Administration, etc.
  • Maintaining positive and trust-based relationships with a sophisticated client base, while supporting the onboarding of new clients
  • Supporting complex reporting requirements and planning needs, including foreign information reporting and multi-jurisdictional considerations such as forms 3520, 5471, 8938, FBAR, etc.
  • Leading and overseeing the work of a small but high-caliber Tax team, while serving as a mentor to staff and supporting career growth & development paths
  • Serving as a key leader within the firm during strategic initiatives, special projects, and firm development activities

To be considered, candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • 12+ years of progressive Tax experience, with a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Accounting or Taxation is needed. Active CPA license is required.
  • Prior experience in public accounting, with significant exposure to HNW clients and related items such as Trusts, Estates, closely-held businesses, and complex ownership structures is needed.
  • Additional exposure to other relevant items such as risk management, transactional tax, family offices, and foreign reporting requirements is desirable.
  • Proven client service abilities, with outstanding communication & interpersonal skills, and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Previous experience in a managerial capacity, with strong leadership skills.
  • The desire & ability to take on a visible leadership role within an established firm with a strong reputation in the Austin business community.

The firm will provide a competitive compensation package to the chosen individual, including market-commensurate base salary and lucrative annual bonus (40%).
